There are limited places available on the highly successful Aspire Drama in
Education Programme, which is run in conjunction with Trinity College
Dublin. The places are available for children aged between 8 and 10 years
old with a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome/High Functioning Autism.
Drama in Education is used as a method to create a safe environment for the
individual with AS to explore, experience and develop their personal, social
and communication skills. Using a specifically devised approach, these
work-shops aim to address participants’ personal, social and emotional
growth.
These classes are organised under the direction of Dr. Carmel O’Sullivan of
the School of Education, Trinity College Dublin. Students are placed in
classes according to their age and level of maturity. Class sizes are
purposely limited in order to maximise the effectiveness of the approach
with an average student ratio of 4:1. Students’ progress is monitored on a
weekly basis and occasionally classes are video-recorded for the purposes of
research.
