Anthony DoolanAnthony Doolan is the Founder and Coordinator of the Kildare / West Dublin Autism Parents Support Group. Earlier this week, Anthony told his story, parenting and caring for his son Paul, who has Autism.

Anthony gave up his full-time job to drive his son, 80km a day to “Stepping Stones” School for Students with Autism in Kilcloon, Co. Meath. Following a recent review by the Department of Social Protection, and despite the opinion of Paul’s GP, the €174 weekly allowance which Anthony receives to care for Paul was removed. However, after taking the brave step to go to RTE News with the story, the allowance was restored yesterday and Anthony received an apology.

Anthony has long been a leading advocate for families affected by Autism in Kildare and West Dublin and tomorrow evening he has organised a public meeting in Leixlip to discuss Carer’s Allowance. The meeting aims to come up with constructive advice to the Department of Social Protection on how they can improve the application system for those in receipt of Carer’s Allowance.

It is hoped there will be a good turnout on the evening and the meeting is open to all carer’s. The meeting takes place at 8pm in the River Forest Hotel, Leixlip. If you have an interest in the area, please do go along and share your experiences and views!
