Autism Friendly Fitness: The Keep Well Program

The Keep Well campaign, in association with Sport Ireland, has developed an autism friendly fitness program to help our community to remain happy and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The closure of fitness centres and gyms, coupled with limited opportunities for travel, make it especially difficult for autistic to keep up healthy routines which contribute to wellbeing. Exercise can benefit mental health in a number of ways for both autistic and neurotypical people. It releases endorphins which boost mood and relieve tension and anxiety. It also improves energy levels and help nurture healthier sleep cycles. Improved fitness can also bring special benefits to autistic people by using hyperactive energy productively and improving coordination and balance. AsIAm have previously discussed autism friendly fitness methods during COVID-19 and the Keep Well campaign continues this, providing an online resource for exercises which develop motor skills, coordination and strength. The videos were created with the awareness that autistic people will vary in their access needs and learning style and encourage the viewer to take the lessons at their own pace. The Keep Well campaign is aimed at showing people of all ages how we can mind our own physical and mental health and wellbeing by adding healthy and helpful habits to our daily and weekly routines.  It will provide guidelines, information, and tips on how we can make a plan to do things that will help us keep well through the coming months.
