At the core of meaningful empowerment is meaningful education. Bunreacht na hÉireann guarantees an education to each and every Irish citizen, regardless of their personal background and circumstances.

The UNCRPD goes further, obligating signatory states to “recognise the right of persons with disabilities to education. With a view of realising this right without discrimination and on the basis of equal opportunity. State parties shall ensure an inclusive, education system at all levels, and life-long learning.”

In this chapter we take you through the education system, what supports you and your child may be entitled to, how to apply for them, and how to advocate on your own behalf.
