Our Week Online – 24/2/2019

Welcome to Our Week Online. Did anyone else struggle with knowing what to wear in the sudden warm weather this week? We are entering a season of change and transitions (Spring, it’s Spring), and if you’re going through any changes in your own life, take care of yourself. And maybe don’t put away your coats and jumpers just yet.

In Northern Ireland, the number of children diagnosed with autism has more than doubled in the last five years. Increased awareness of the autism spectrum is being cited as a major reason for the jump. The jump in diagnoses has resulted in a significant backlog for assessments and services. In 2016 the Broken Promises report was published criticising the failure to act on the Autism Act passed by the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2011. However within a year of the report the Assembly had collapsed (unrelated).

All Star Clare hurler Peter Duggan talked to the Irish Independent on his experiences with dyslexia and how it has given him a strong work ethic.

Author Jenn Bailey is interviewed about her new children’s picture book A Friend for Henry, which explores an autistic boy’s interactions with his classmates as he plays and makes friends. The book is based on her own son’s experiences in preschool.

Speaking of picture books, Rachael Donohoe and her picture book Being a True Friend are profiled in the Carlow Nationalist this week, with Rachael’s teacher Erika Hanton. AsIAm are supporting the publication of Being a True Friend, find out more here.

Employment initiatives for supporting autistic employees often focus on how to support the autistic person in a neurotypical workplace. But how would a workplace specifically built for autistic employees work, what would it look like? The New York Times profiles Auticon and MindSpark, specific companies that employ autistic people, and learns from the people who work there how specialist offices like this work for them.

By now you’ve probably heard of Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old Swedish activist who’s inspired children around the world to fight for the future of the planet. She’s also spoken about her Asperger’s diagnosis and how her autism helps her in her climate activism. This profile in the Financial Times gives an insight into what drives Thunberg to work for the future of the planet, why she sees her autism as a gift, and how she feels about becoming the face of a global movement.

And one from the archives…

One of the major themes that emerged from this month’s Puberty and Sexuality Community Support seminar was that however different an autistic child might be from their peers, or whatever diagnosis a child has got, everyone will eventually experience puberty, and have to muddle through the best they can.

In Refinery29 UK, three women with learning disabilities and autism and their families share their experiences with menstruating – managing their period and its physical and emotional symptoms and side effects, how they relate to other neurotypical women their age, and how they experience being an adult woman when the rest of the world may only see a “childlike” disability.

Sally is obsessed with periods. She asks every woman she meets, including me, “Are you on?” When I say “No” she asks, “When?” I tell her “Next week” and she says, “Me too, me too.” She repeats this question a lot. “Bad tummy?” she asks. “Yes, sometimes,” I reply. “Bad head?” she asks. “Yes, sometimes,” I reply. “Me too,” she says. I ask Elizabeth why Sally is so interested in periods. “I think because it makes her feel like a woman,” Elizabeth says, “it makes her feel she’s ‘normal’ because she, like every ‘normal’ woman, has a period. So she likes that. She likes to feel like everybody else, so she talks about it all the time. She doesn’t have many common bonds with other women, but she does when it comes to her period.”
