Information on getting a child diagnosed and next steps

Despite Autism enjoying greater visibility and awareness among the general public in Ireland, starting the journey to supporting an autistic child remains difficult.  There is still a level of uncertainty when it comes to how a parent or guardian might go about having their child assessed and diagnosed. Great uncertainty also exists among society in relation to what language is appropriate to use when talking about and to those on the autism spectrum.

AsIAm made the decision to publish ‘Starting the Autism Journey’ as a result of the high volume of daily correspondence from concerned families all over the country who didn’t know where to turn for help. They needed information, support and guidance about how to get their children assessed and what to do following a diagnosis.

This resource was produced in conjunction with Lucena Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Dublin.

This resource, the first of three packs, is for parents/guardians and includes a range of vital information on starting your autism journey. This includes terminology, how autism is diagnosed, what to expect during the assessment process and what professionals will be involved.

The resource also provides information to guide your journey after you secure your child’s diagnosis. This includes a language guide, information on relevant education, community, and financial supports.
