AsIAm is deeply concerned about proposed cuts to allocations of Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) in mainstream schools.
This morning, we have written to the NCSE and the Department of Education seeking clear reassurance that every Autistic student who requires access to an SNA will receive one.
Our correspondence outlines the critical role SNAs play in supporting Autistic students to regulate, participate and access education meaningfully.
We have also highlighted the need to review SNA allocations, which have remained frozen despite recommendations in the 2017 SNA Review.
AsIAm has requested a dedicated briefing at the next Special Education Forum to better understand current allocation models, how existing SNAs in mainstream settings will be maintained, and how supports will keep pace with the continued growth of Autism classes.
Education is a constitutional right and SNAs play a pivotal part in children realising that right.
