AsIAm was happy to attend the launch of the National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People, a Strategy built on five key pillars and 21 commitments that set out the State’s priorities for the Disabled community in Ireland over the next five years. These areas include:
The launch of this Strategy marks an important milestone in progressing the rights of Disabled people and ensuring that the State’s obligations under the UNCRPD are met. While this publication sets out a strong framework and highlights key areas of support, it is imperative that the implementation of these commitments is clearly outlined and adequately resourced in the accompanying Action Plan, due for publication in November.
Speaking on the launch of the National Human Rights Strategy, AsIAm CEO Adam Harris said:
“The publication of the National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People 2025–2030 is an important moment for the Disabled community in Ireland. It highlights several key commitments the Government has pledged to. Whilst we welcome the broad considerations within this Strategy, it is important that we also ensure initiatives such as this and the Autism Innovation Strategy are fully resourced and implemented if we are to see meaningful change for the Autistic community and the wider Disabled community.”
He added:
“The launch (3rd September) heard from key stakeholders and policymakers on the importance of a cultural, societal and systemic shift in how Government engages with and supports the Disabled community in Ireland. Strategies such as the Autism Innovation Strategy and this new Strategy confirm and reaffirm that accessibility and access to services cannot be an afterthought for Autistic people and the wider Disabled community.”
